Alleppey and Kumarakom,
probably the two best back water area in India. Both the places are situated in
Kerala and are not very far from each other.
We wanted to go for one day houseboat trip in Kerala back water
and we choose Kumarakom. Kumarakom is located in Kottayam district of Kerala.
700 km from Bangalore. You can reach it by train, bus and air.
We first went to Ernakulam by KSRTC bus. From Ernakulam we then
went to Kottayam by local bus and them from there to houseboat pick up location
at Kumarakom by auto. Though it was bit hectic journey, however it was a nice
experience with the upcoming excitement.
We reached the pickup location around 11 am and the houseboat
was already waiting for us. We have booked two room houseboat. There were three
staffs in the boat. They welcomed us and the journey started.
It went through bit narrow canal with houses both the side.
There were so many other boats also there in the water.
We came to main backwater area and it was just beautiful to see. Everywhere it was just water and so many houseboats. It was last week of December, so the holiday time and it was crowded. We saw different kind of houseboats from one room to five rooms.

It was lunch time and got delicious Kerala dishes with fish fry. They have parked the houseboat to corner near to some paddy field. The boat had the open space with sitting are, dining area. Weather was awesome that day.
We started again. We saw there were fishermen selling fishes on
their boat. You can buy those and cook in the house boat can prepare dishes for
you. The boat was keep moving and we were enjoying the back water beauty.
It was almost evening and they parked again in some places near
some paddy field. There were many other houseboats were also parked in the same
line. We got down from the boat, roam around the place. It was sunset time and
just captured some nice moments. I bought my DSLR just a week back. So was very
excited to take many photos and doing experiment.
We came back to our house boat. It was very silent, and we could
hear only the sound of water. Dinner was ready by 8 pm and after the dinner we
sit for some time and then went for sleep.
Got up bit early in the morning. Around 7 boat again started and
roam around the back water along with other houseboats. They have provided
breakfast with idly and sambar and tea. We returned to the place from where we
started previous days.
It was one of my best travel experience and we enjoyed a lot. I
would recommend everyone to try this at least for one time in the life.
